Commissions
Here are some commissions I’m working on, whether just for the models or for a physical project.
T-20P Cruising Proa
20m Cruising Proa
For my final project of my certification, I was allowed to design a boat of my choosing. I knew I wanted a large yacht to be inventive and creative with the space and design. I settled on a large Proa project that I knew would present the most design and engineering challenges. I wanted to let loose with this project and put everything I learned into a single boat. With this in mind, I set out with the hull design and many dozens of minor hull shape tweaks, dozens more resistance CFD runs, and many long nights, making use of the space for interior design.
T-18PB Pilot Boat
18m Pilot Boat
For my third project, I designed an 18-meter pilot boat that could quickly and safely deliver pilots to awaiting cargo vessels in need of a highly skilled pilot. This boat needed to travel at 36 knots and get on plane quickly; it also required a huge open deck space to allow pilots plenty of space to walk in rough seas safely. After running propulsive CFDs, this project presented many challenges and dozens of redesigns on the hull. This boat also needed to meet ISO design category A standards in aluminum scantling. After reading ISO 12215-5 and developing a working reusable spreadsheet that outputs scantling requirements, I was able to design a boat I am very proud of.
T-39S Bluewater Sailboat
39’ Performance Cruising Sailboat
For my second project, I was tasked to design a sailboat hull that could brave the open ocean and contain a previously modeled interior. Designed as a performance cruising yacht, the T-39S was my first experience with design hydrostatics and hydrodynamics. Using Rhinoceros 3D with a grasshopper script I made to output real-time design hydrostatics coupled with many overnight simericsMD (CFD) resistance runs, I could determine that the hull shape would work confidently. I also designed the rigging based on Nordic Boat Standards.
T-38 Planing Powerboat
38’ Planing Powerboat
I was given a great but empty hull with remarkable hydrostatics for my first project. I was tasked with developing a sheer line, deck, cockpit, superstructure, general interior arrangement, and mechanical arrangement (this included HVAC and ducting, freshwater, electrical, Seakeeper, etc.). The interior arrangement needed accommodations for 2 with the option to sleep an additional 2.
Plywood Sailing Dinghy
A few years ago, I built a 12' stitch-and-glue sailing dinghy as a fun project. Building this boat was the most fun I have had building anything. Many years later, with this boat build, I found my passion at The Landing School.
